Kundli details in a biodata, explained
Many Hindu, Jain and some Sikh families match horoscopes (kundli milan) before a marriage. The biodata gives the details they need. If your family does not follow this, you can leave the whole section out.
| Field | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Time of birth (जन्म समय) | The exact time you were born, from the birth certificate or family records. | 10:30 AM |
| Place of birth (जन्म स्थान) | City or town of birth — used with the time to make a kundli. | Jaipur, Rajasthan |
| Rashi (राशि) | Moon sign at birth, from your kundli (12 rashis). | Kark (Cancer) |
| Nakshatra (नक्षत्र) | Birth star, from your kundli (27 nakshatras). | Pushya |
| Gotra (गोत्र) | Family lineage passed down from the father’s side. | Bharadwaj |
| Manglik (मांगलिक) | Whether Mars (Mangal) sits in certain houses of the kundli; families who match kundlis ask about it. | No / Yes / Partial / Don’t know |
Where do I find my rashi and nakshatra?
They are written in your janam kundli (birth chart). If you do not have one, a pandit or astrologer can make it from your date, time and place of birth. The rashi found from the first letter of a name (naam se rashi) is the name rashi, which can be different from the birth rashi.
What if I don’t know my time of birth?
Leave it empty, or write “not known”. Many families then match using the name rashi, or do not match horoscopes at all.
Gotra
The gotra is the paternal lineage. Families usually avoid marriage within the same gotra; this is a tradition, not a legal rule. See the gotra list for correct spellings.
Manglik
Write what your kundli says: No, Yes, Partial (anshik) or Don’t know. It is better to write “Don’t know” than to guess; the other family’s pandit will check.
