In India the word "biodata" is used in two very different situations: for marriage proposals and, less often now, for job applications. That is why people search for the difference between a biodata, a resume and a CV. Here is a clear answer.
Quick comparison
| Biodata | Resume | CV (Curriculum Vitae) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meaning | "Biographical data" — facts about a person | A short summary of work and skills | "Course of life" — a full academic and work record |
| Main use in India | Marriage proposals; some government and older job forms | Most private-sector jobs | Academic, research, medical and international jobs |
| Length | 1 page | 1–2 pages | 2 pages or more |
| Personal details | Yes — date of birth, height, religion, family, horoscope | No (except name and contact) | Minimal |
| Photo | Yes, for marriage | Usually no in India's private sector | Sometimes, depending on the country |
| Focus | The person and the family | Achievements relevant to one job | Complete record: education, research, publications |
Biodata
A biodata lists personal facts. For marriage, it covers personal details, horoscope, education and career, family, contact, partner expectations and a short "About me". For jobs, older formats included date of birth, father's name, marital status, address and education — some government forms still ask for these.

Resume
A resume is built for one purpose: getting an interview. It leads with a summary, then work experience with achievements, skills and education. Personal details like religion, height or family have no place in it.
CV
A CV is a complete record, common in academia, medicine and many countries outside India. It includes all education, research, publications, conferences, teaching and awards, and keeps growing over a career.
Which one should you send?
- Marriage proposal: a biodata. Never send a job resume to a family.
- Private-sector job in India: a resume.
- Teaching, research, PhD or medical posts: a CV.
- Government job: follow the form exactly; it may ask for biodata-style details.
Common mistakes
- Sending a marriage biodata to an employer (with photo, religion and horoscope).
- Using a job resume as a marriage biodata — it says nothing about family or the person.
- Calling a two-page resume a "CV" for a corporate job — recruiters won't mind, but keep it focused.
