NRI marriage biodata: what to include and how

Writing a biodata as an NRI or for an NRI match — visa or citizenship status, country and city, plans to return, time zones and how families in India read these lines.

An NRI biodata is read with a particular set of questions in mind: Where exactly do you live? What is your visa or citizenship status? Will your partner be able to work there? Do you plan to come back? Answering these upfront makes your biodata stand out — and protects families in India, who are often wary of unclear NRI proposals.

The lines an NRI biodata must have

LineExample
Country and cityToronto, Canada
StatusPermanent Resident (since 2022)
Role and employerData Analyst, Royal Bank of Canada
Years abroadIn Canada since 2018
PlansSettled in Canada; open to returning in 5–7 years
Spouse's work rightsSpouse eligible for an open work permit

Use exact terms. "Settled abroad" or "in the USA" tells families very little.

Visa and citizenship words to use

If a spouse's ability to work depends on the visa type, say so honestly. This is one of the most important questions for working women considering an NRI match.

Time zone and contact

Add the city's time difference and the best time to call from India:

Contact: Mother — Mrs. Neeta Arora, +91 98xxx xxxxx (Delhi). Son is available on video call on weekends, 8–10 pm IST.

This small line shows respect for the other family and avoids missed calls.

Family in India

Write where your parents live and who in India can meet the other family in person. NRI proposals move faster when the families can meet locally.

Photos and video calls

Use a recent photo. Expect families to ask for a video call early — offer it before they ask.

For families in India receiving an NRI biodata

Check before you proceed:

  1. The employer exists and the role is plausible (search the company and the person's professional profile).
  2. Visa or citizenship claims match what the person says on a video call.
  3. Someone in the family in India can be met in person.
  4. Never send money or share documents before verification.

Our matrimonial profile verification checklist covers this in detail. You can also see an NRI biodata sample.

Example

Name: Rohan Arora — 31 years — 5'11" (180 cm)
Education: MS Computer Science, University of Toronto
Occupation: Data Analyst, Royal Bank of Canada, Toronto — Hybrid
Status: Permanent Resident of Canada (since 2022)
Plans: Settled in Toronto; spouse eligible for an open work permit
Family: Parents in Delhi (father retired, mother teacher)

Questions

Should an NRI biodata mention salary in foreign currency?

Usually not. If you include it, use a range in the local currency; converting to rupees is misleading because living costs differ.

How long does an NRI spouse visa take?

It varies widely by country and changes often; check the current timeline on the official immigration website of that country and share it honestly.

Should we meet in person before agreeing?

Yes. Video calls help, but meet in person — and meet the family — before any commitment.
