A surprising number of proposals fall apart late because of something that was never on the biodata: a night shift, a job that moves every three years, or a work-from-home role the other family assumed was "no job". These are easy to state upfront, and stating them saves everyone time.
The four career lines every biodata needs
- Education: highest degree and institution.
- Occupation: your actual role — "Staff Nurse", "Software Engineer", "Assistant Professor".
- Organisation and city: "AIIMS, New Delhi"; "Infosys, Pune".
- Work timing: the new line most biodatas miss.
In the biodata maker, work timing is a drop-down with these options — and if none fits, choose "✎ Write my own":
| Option | When to choose it |
|---|---|
| Day shift | Regular office or field hours |
| Night shift | Most of your working hours are at night |
| Rotational shift | Hospitals, airlines, BPO, police, factories |
| Flexible hours | You set your own hours most days |
| Work from home | Fully remote role |
| Hybrid (office + home) | A few days each in office and at home |
| Own business | You run a business or shop |
| Not working currently | Studying, between jobs, or homemaker by choice |
Why work timing matters so much
- Night and rotational shifts change family life: meals, weekends, festivals. Families who know in advance can plan; families who find out later often feel misled.
- Work from home is a real job. Writing it removes the old assumption that someone at home "doesn't work".
- Own business often means long hours and few holidays in peak season. Say so.
Open to relocate
Right after work timing, add whether you are open to moving cities after marriage: Yes, No, or Open to discuss. This single line prevents many late-stage breakups between couples in different cities.
Writing about transfers and postings
Government, defence, banking and some private jobs come with transfers. Write it plainly:
Officer, State Bank of India — currently Lucknow (transferable across UP)
Captain, Indian Army — transferable; family accommodation available
Career breaks and changes
- Preparing for an exam: "Preparing for UPSC Civil Services (2nd attempt); B.Tech, NIT Trichy."
- Break for family reasons: "Took a two-year break to care for a parent; returning to work in 2026."
- Changed fields: one line on the old and the new role is enough.
Honest context reads far better than a gap that the other family has to ask about.
Examples
Software Engineer, Infosys, Pune — Hybrid (3 days office) — Open to relocate
Staff Nurse, Apollo Hospital, Chennai — Rotational shift — Prefers Chennai
Runs family hardware store, Rajkot — Own business — Not open to relocate
