The first meeting carries a lot of weight: two families, two nervous people and a decision that depends on an hour of conversation. These twenty tips help everyone relax enough to actually get to know each other.
Before the meeting
- Read the biodata again. Note two or three things you'd genuinely like to ask about.
- Agree the format with your family. Who will be there, how long, and when the boy and girl will talk alone.
- Choose a calm place. A family home, or a quiet café for the one-to-one part. Avoid loud restaurants.
- Dress like yourself, a little neater. If you wear kurtas every day, wear a nice one; costumes make you awkward.
- Match your photo. If your appearance has changed since the biodata photo, mention it beforehand.
- Sleep well and eat beforehand. Hunger and nerves don't mix.
During the meeting
- Be on time. Being late reads as disinterest.
- Put the phone away. Fully.
- Greet the elders first. Small courtesies are noticed.
- Start light. Ask about their day, city or work before anything serious.
- Ask open questions. "What do you enjoy about your work?" rather than "Do you like your job?" See 50 questions.
- Listen and follow up. The best conversations come from the second question, not the first.
- Share honestly. If something important — a previous engagement, a health issue, a job change — hasn't been disclosed, this is the time.
- Avoid money and dowry topics completely. And never comment on looks.
- Parents: step back. After introductions, give the boy and girl at least twenty minutes alone.
- Notice behaviour, not just answers. How someone treats a waiter, a parent or a sibling says a lot.
After the meeting
- Talk to each other at home separately. Let the boy or girl share their view before parents give theirs.
- Decide on the next step, not the whole marriage. "Would I like to talk again?" is the right question after one meeting.
- Reply within a week. Yes, "let's talk again", or a kind no. Templates are in how to say no politely.
- Don't over-analyse nerves. Many good couples had an awkward first meeting.
A simple plan for the day
