Few fields cause as much hesitation as income. Write it, and you worry about sounding boastful or being judged on a number. Leave it out, and families may assume the worst or call just to ask. There is no single rule, but there is a sensible default.
The short answer
- Default: don't put an exact salary on the biodata. Write your role, organisation and city clearly; that already tells families most of what they want to know.
- If your community expects it: write an annual range, not a monthly figure.
- Always: be ready to share the real number honestly once both families are seriously interested.
In our biodata maker, the "Annual income" field is hidden by default for exactly this reason. Turn it on only if you want it printed.
Why a range works better than a number
| Exact figure | Range |
|---|---|
| "₹14,25,000 per annum" | "₹12–15 lakh per annum" |
| Changes every appraisal; biodata goes out of date | Stays true for longer |
| Invites comparison and negotiation | Gives a sense of stability without detail |
| Feels like a pay slip | Feels like a profile |
How to write it for different situations
- Salaried: "Annual income: ₹12–15 lakh" or simply leave it to the role ("Senior Analyst, HDFC Bank").
- Government job: the pay level or grade often says enough — "Assistant Section Officer (Level 7), Central Government".
- Business: describe the business, not the turnover — "Runs family textile business (two showrooms), Surat".
- Professional practice: "Practising Chartered Accountant, own firm since 2019".
- Abroad: write it in the local currency with a range, or leave it out — conversion to rupees misleads because living costs differ.
- Not currently working or between jobs: say so plainly with the plan — "Completing MBA (2026); previously worked 3 years at TCS".
What families are actually checking
Most parents aren't looking for the biggest number. They want to know:
- Is the income stable? A permanent role or an established business matters more than the amount.
- Is it enough to run a home in that city? ₹8 lakh means different things in Indore and Mumbai.
- Is the person honest about it? An inflated figure discovered later ends proposals immediately.
When to share the real figure
A good time is after the first meeting, when both sides want to move ahead. Share it directly and simply. Asking for salary slips at this stage is uncommon but not unreasonable if the other family is uneasy — offer it calmly if asked.
Salary for women's biodatas
Many working women wonder whether mentioning income will put off some families. If financial independence matters to you and you'd like a partner who values it, the role and organisation already say it. Writing the income is your choice — it can help filter out families who are uncomfortable with a working daughter-in-law. Read more in marriage biodata for working women.
