For many Hindu families, kundli matching is a non-negotiable step. For others, it's a formality — or not done at all. Arguments about it can derail good proposals, so it helps to understand what it checks, how families actually use it, and how to keep it in proportion.
What kundli matching checks
The most common method, Ashtakoot milan, compares the boy's and girl's birth nakshatra and rashi across eight factors worth 36 points in total: Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi. Astrologers also look at Manglik dosha and the full charts. Details are in 36 gun milan explained.
How families use it today
| Approach | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Strict | No meeting unless 18+ gunas and no major dosha |
| Advisory | Match first; if there's a dosha, consult an astrologer about exceptions |
| Light | Check names only, or match after the families like each other |
| None | Decide purely on compatibility and family values |
All four are common, and families on different approaches can still match well if they discuss it early.
What kundli matching can't tell you
- Whether two people will communicate well, share values, or respect each other's families.
- Whether they agree on careers, money, children or where to live.
- Whether either person has habits that would make married life hard.
These come from conversation and verification, not charts.
A sensible way to combine both
- Discuss your family's approach at the first call. It avoids heartbreak later.
- Match before meeting, not after the roka. Late "the kundli didn't match" is the most painful kind of no.
- Use name-based matching only as a quick indicator. Our gun milan tool helps; the real match uses birth time.
- If there's a dosha, ask about exceptions. Many doshas are considered cancelled in specific situations — see Manglik dosha and Nadi dosha.
- Give real compatibility equal weight. Use 50 questions to understand each other.
- Avoid fear-based remedies that cost a lot of money or create anxiety.
When birth time isn't known
Many people don't know their exact time of birth. Families then use the name rashi, or consult an astrologer about other traditional methods. Read kundli matching without birth time.
